The SACC gets a new leadership

Some weeks ago I got the invitation to the Triennial Conference of the South African Council of Churches. I knew that it was coming, after having met the President of the SACC, Bishop Joe Seoka, when I was in Busan for the WCC Assembly in November last year. But I was not sure about the dates. It would have been great to be part of this occasion but unfortunately work kept me busy at the university.

A short background: The SACC has had severe problems the last few years. One could even discuss whether it still existed. My opinion is that, although the office had to close due to bankruptcy, and that the Triennial Conference should have met already in 2013, the Council has existed. The Council is first and foremost a fellowship of churches and other organisation. This very fellowship exists even if the organisation and office is experiencing a crisis.

The theme of the conference, which took place yesterday and today, was:
God of Life: Renew, Restore and Transform us for the service of your Kingdom. Isaiah. 43:19
It reflects the need for something dramatically new to happen. In order to accomplish this, the new leadership is:
President: Bishop Ziphozihle D. Siwa. (Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. He preached at the funeral of Mandela. The sermon is here!)

Senior Vice President:  Dr Frank Chikane. (He was the General Secretary of the SACC 1987-1993, when he was head hunted to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and after that to the Presidency of Thabo Mbeki. With him, I think the Council wants to get the organisation in order. The question is how people will regard his close links to the ANC. One student said spontaneously: “He is polluted!”)

Vice President: Father Michael Lapsley. (He is the founder of the Institute for Healing of Memories. Fr Lapsley is a staunch member of the ANC.)
So, will this new leadership be able to give the necessary renewal, restoration and transformation to the Council? Are they the three wise men, who will accomplish that? There is no doubt that they have experience. Time will show.

On a critical note I want to say two things:

1) Why only men?

2) Why three leaders with (as far as I understand) close links to the ruling party? (About Bishop Siwa I’m speaking under correction. He did preach at the Funeral of Mandela – the reason was of course that Mandela was a Methodist, not that Siwa belongs to the ANC. So I might be wrong!) But the other two are ANC members and highly respected.

Interestingly enough, when I googled for this news (which I didn’t find on the web) I found something else instead. (I googled on SACC, Chikane and Lapsley.) I found an Eulogy by President Zuma which he gave at the funeral of the struggle veteran and former Member of Parliament, Sister Bernard Ncube. Zuma said, among other things:
South Africa produced exceptional men and women of the cloth who fulfilled Biblical scriptures through bravely using the church as a site of struggle to free the people they ministered to.

These leaders included church leaders like Dr Beyers Naude the founder of the Christian Institute, Archbishop Dennis Hurley, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr Alan Boesak, Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa and Father Albert Nolan and the Reverends Frank Chikane, Mcebisi Xundu, Michael Lapsley, and of course Sister Bernard Ncube.

The illustrious list also includes Father Trevor Huddlestone, who became a founder member and President of the British Anti-Apartheid Movement. He played a critical role in both the World Council of Churches and the SACC to ensure that the church adopted the programme to combat racism.
Both Chikane, Lapsley and the SACC are mentioned. Zuma also manages to mention at least one women: Sr Ncube (after all it was her funeral).

About Zuma it is also interesting to know that he, contrary to Mandela and Mbeki, has communicated more with charismatic and evangelical churches. Mandela and Mbeki supported the NRLF (The National Religious Leaders Forum) where the SACC was very active and so called mainline churches in majority. Zuma opted for something else and the National Interfaith Leadership Council (NILC) was formed. Those two bodies later merged into the National Interfaith Council of South Africa (NICSA). Instrumental in this process was Pastor Ray McCauley of the Rhema Bible Church.

Well, time will show what happens with the SACC. I pray that these three competent persons will be able to facilitate the process of getting the Council back on track.

If I were to add something I would like the whole Council to be restructured. Just like it happened with the Christian Council of South Africa (CCSA) in 1967-68, when it got new constitution and a new name. This organisation was only 31 years old. (It was formed in 1936). The SACC is 46 years old. To me it makes sense to restructure an ecumenical movement from time to time, because the ecumenical landscape changes. I hope the new leadership read the WCC document: “Together Towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes” closely. Especially the part called: “Mission from the margins”. The questions should be:
Who are on the margins in South Africa today?

How do we make sure that their voice is being listened to?
May God bless the SACC! South Africa needs it!

IsiZulu – Easy Zulu?

Our course book
Thursday was a busy day. After lectures, supervision of students and a long meeting with the Research and Higher Degrees Committee, I rushed home to let the dog out. And then I rushed back to the Old Main Building, room 114, where the Basic isiZulu course was going to start 17h00. It was not a good idea to run when the temperature was +35 degrees centigrade and the lecture room is without air conditioner or a fan. To make it worse the class didn’t start on time. So all my rushing was in vain. Why do I never learn?

The class had met already the previous week but I could not attend because I never got information about the venue. But it’s OK. Kulungile – as we say in isiZulu! I believe I will catch up with the rest.

The pedagogy is interesting. I am not used to reading sentences in chorus. And I am especially NOT used to teachers laughing out loud (I am not kidding) when students make mistakes. As a Swedish person I get offended. (We do that easily in Sweden! In Swedish it is called to be “kränkt”. Which means to be insulted or offended. The word is often misused. It is a serious matter when people really get “kränkt” and one should not to use the word carelessly. It is not fair to people who really get “kränkt”.)

When I looked around I saw that everyone else also laughed out loud. White, black, coloured, Indian etc. People from South Africa, who do not speak isiZulu and people from other African countries – all were laughing! So I started to laugh myself.

The first part of the lecture was a mix between a class and a stand-up-comedy performance, where we all performed. When I analysed the situation I realised that there was a lot of tension that needed to be released.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal has decided that all staff needs to take this course if they want promotion. And undergraduate students need a similar course to obtain their degree. The reason I have blogged about before. More than 10 million people have isiZulu as their mother-tongue. There should be an opportunity for people to use their first language at university level. The project is not restricted to KwaZulu-Natal. Other provinces do the same – with their different vernaculars.

So, what did I learn? This, for instance:
A: Ungubani igama lakho? (What is your name?)

B: NginguAnders. (My name is Anders.)

A: Ungubani isibongo sakho? (What is your surname/family name?)

B: Isibongo sami nginguGoranzon. (My surname/family name is Goranzon.)
So, this weekend I have asked as many as possible about their name. Even if I already knew them! Practice makes perfect!

ANC, DA and SAPS

No, SAPS is not a new political party in South Africa. The acronym stands for: South African Police Service.

Today the police, the ANC and the DA were involved in a clash, if we are to believe the Mail and Guardian. But I also heard about the clash on radio and I saw it on TV. The story is this:

ANC issued an election manifesto some weeks ago. In this manifesto they say they are going to create 6 million new job opportunities the coming 5 years. The DA then decided to organise a march to Luthuli House (the headquarters of the ANC) and hand over a memorandum, stating that the country needs real jobs and not job opportunities.

But the DA did not feel confident that the ANC supporters would welcome them with open arms, so the DA hired private, armed security guards, to protect the march. This was interpreted as a provocation by ANC-supporters, who took to the streets and suddenly Johannesburg saw two political rallies. In the same neighbourhood, at the same time. Not good. Not good at all!

I believe it was unwise by the DA to have armed guards. One can also ask if it is was good decision to march to another party’s headquarters. Anyhow, they got permission from the police to go ahead but they had to stop a block before Luthuli House. At Beyers Naude Square. Fair enough!

What the ANC did was wrong. They were not permitted to gather. So the party, which speaks about discipline, should have stopped their members. On radio one of the leaders said that they needed to protect their headquarters. They felt that Luthuli House was under a siege. Really?

It is election year. Tomorrow the President will deliver the State of Nation Address. Most probably he will not mention what happened today. What is interesting is that neither the ANC nor the DA says anything on their respective websites about the clash. To me it would have been a chance at least to give some own views about the incident.

So, what happened? Some bricks were thrown. Some ANC supporters were arrested. As far as I have understood, no one was hurt. But the way I understand it, it was not an example of respect! From neither party! With the upcoming election 7 May I hope the parties will be more serious in the coming months.

Imorgon, fredag, hålls nomineringsval inför biskopsvalet i Lunds stift.

Short-lived unity

It feels a bit sad. It was promising, that DA and AgangSA were going to cooperate. I strongly believe that South Africa needs a strong opposition. Anyhow: today we got the news that Mamphela Ramphele will go back to her own party and not be the presidential candidate of the DA. Helen Zille even says that Ramphele
... has proven she can’t be trusted ...
At least according to City Press.
Now it seems, at least in my view, that the biggest threat to the ANC will be Julius Malema and the EFF. That is not good news.
