New leadership for the ANC

Today Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as new President of the African National Congress (ANC). Mail and Guardian reports that he won with 2 440 votes to Nkosazana Dlamini- Zuma’s 2 261. The rest of the leadership will be:

Deputy President: David MabuzaNational Chairperson: Gwede Mantashe
New Secretary General: Ace Magashule
Deputy Secretary General: Jessie Duarte
Treasurer-General: Paul Mashatile

I don’t know much of them but I understand that the top six, as they are referred to, consist of three Zuma-supporters and three Rampahosa-loyals. This means that ANC is split in two.

The only person I know of is Ace Magashule. He became Premier of the Free State when we lived in Bloemfontein. He was regarded as a notorious crook. From close friends I have learnt about his corrupt actions. It is not good news that he becomes the new Secretary General. But of course, it is a democratic decision.

What about Cyril Ramaphosa then? His played a crucial role when South Africa became a democracy in the beginning of the 1990s. He was one of the chief negotiators when the new constitution came into being. Many thought he would become the successor of Mandela. The party, however, appointed Thabo Mbeki as deputy president. Ramaphosa then left active politics and went into private business. According to Daily Maverick he was, in 2015, by Forbes estimated to have a net worth of $450-million.

This is of course a problem. He is a very rich person. One of my oldest friends in South Africa, Lorraine-ann Isaacs, a dedicated teacher in Cape Town, made this comment on Facebook today about rich persons like Rampahosa:

… because of their accumulated wealth and opulence they are now too removed from the plight of the ordinary, POOR people on the streets...he and his new administration have a lot to proof

I agree. But I hope that the corruption that was linked to Jacob Zuma at least will be halted.
